H. Moser Shocks Horological World with Formula 1-Inspired Smartwatch

H. Moser & Cie. has delivered perhaps their most surprising creation yet with the launch of two Formula 1-inspired Streamliners ahead of the Barcelona Grand Prix, developed in partnership with Alpine Motorsports.

While the brand has built a reputation for unconventional materials—including literal cheese—nothing prepared the watch world for this announcement: H. Moser’s first-ever smartwatch alongside a sophisticated mechanical chronograph.

Alpine Partnership and Innovation

The more traditional Streamliner Alpine Drivers Edition showcases a newly skeletonized dial that reveals the unusual architecture of the Agenhor-based HMC 700 movement, including the self-winding rotor typically hidden beneath the dial.

Racing-inspired design cues permeate every detail: the skeletonized rotor echoes Alpine A110 wheel rim aesthetics, while V-shaped bridges pay homage to triangulated suspension systems. The caseback features a center bridge crafted to resemble a driver’s helmet, completing the motorsport narrative.

Housed in a blue PVD-coated stainless steel case measuring 42.3mm diameter by 14.2mm thick, this chronograph commands significant wrist presence while maintaining the distinctive Streamliner silhouette.

True to Agenhor tradition, the minutes and seconds counters are centralized, eliminating conventional subdials for cleaner dial architecture. The 72-hour power reserve and 21,600 VpH frequency ensure reliable performance whether trackside or in daily use.

The real shocker comes with the Streamliner Alpine Mechanics Edition—H. Moser’s venture into hybrid smartwatch territory. From a distance, it maintains classic Moser DNA with the distinctive Streamliner case, small Funky Blue fumé dial at 12 o’clock, and bright blue rubber strap reminiscent of last year’s Alpine Cylindrical Tourbillon. However, the lower portion features a black display that transforms when activated.

Digital Disruption

Taking the watch out of standby mode reveals hidden digital complications including GMT function, split-seconds chronograph, perpetual calendar, and specialized “F1 Mode” with countdown functionality and team alert notifications. This represents H. Moser’s first foray into connected timepieces, achieved through partnership with Sequent for the hybrid analog-digital caliber.

The power management system reflects the dual nature: 12 months for analog time indication and sufficient digital power for “6 Grands Prix” worth of continuous display use. Charging via included cable bridges traditional and modern approaches, creating what may be horology’s most sophisticated hybrid timepiece.

This unconventional approach reflects genuine innovation in Formula 1 partnerships, moving beyond typical collaborations focused on colorways and engravings to address real functionality needs. The concept acknowledges that while drivers might prefer pure mechanical chronographs, mechanics require digital precision and connectivity for race-critical timing and communications.

The duo launches as a 200-piece limited set priced at $70,000, representing the first phase of the year-old Alpine partnership. Additionally, the Mechanics Edition will be available separately in 500 pieces for collectors who already own Alpine-themed Streamliner Tourbillons, providing upgrade paths for existing enthusiasts.

This launch demonstrates H. Moser‘s willingness to challenge horological conventions while maintaining their reputation for quality and innovation. By creating both traditional mechanical excellence and groundbreaking hybrid technology, the brand addresses different aspects of motorsport timing needs while pushing boundaries that few Swiss manufactures would dare approach.

For collectors seeking either pure mechanical sophistication or cutting-edge hybrid functionality, these Alpine editions prove that even the most traditional watchmakers can embrace technological evolution when driven by genuine partnership and practical application needs.
